Dear Families,
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and briefly explain some of the counseling services we offer here at Jackson Davis Elementary School. We will both be working with all of our students at Jackson Davis (Kindergarten - 5th grade) throughout the day as we teach counseling lessons each week. Mrs. Neylon will be the primary contact for families of students Kindergarten - 2nd grade and Ms. Turner will be the primary contact for 3rd - 5th grade families.
Through counseling services we coordinate, advocate, and consult with teachers, parents, staff, and community members to serve the best interests of our student population. The services we provide help children work through normal developmental issues that are affecting their academic success, as well as social/emotional, and career development. The three comprehensive services we offer to students are targeted to help them develop and learn to their highest potential.
We are able to serve the whole student population through a structured series of whole group classroom lessons. We will visit each classroom weekly as part of the LAMPS rotation schedule to conduct comprehensive lessons that relate to developmental issues students face. School Counseling lessons will address the topics of decision-making, conflict resolution, test taking, study and organizational skills, bullying, character education, and social skills. Further, we will focus our units/ lessons on the 5 core values we hope to instill in each of our students: Proud, Courageous, Inclusive, Cooperative, and Responsible.
Small group counseling is designed for students who share concerns that are similar to others. The small group structure is designed to make students feel comfortable and at ease by talking with peers who have similar situations. Group members are selected by referrals from parents, teachers, and students. Examples of group topics include social skills, coping skill development, conflict resolution, and study skills. More group topics may also be supported, depending on the needs of our school population. Parental permission is mandatory before students are allowed to participate in small groups.
Individual counseling is available through referral by teachers, parents, and students. Individual counseling is designed to help students with challenges impacting their academic and/or behavioral success. This counseling is for students who have specific needs and would benefit from one-on-one short term counseling (1-6 sessions). Parental permission is required before working with students for multiple sessions.
Throughout the year, we will also offer parent education workshops such as "Coffee With The Counselor." Information on these events will come through news letters and e-mails.
We also help to connect families in need with resources within the community. Feel free to contact us at anytime you need services. E-mail is the best way to reach us and we can set up a time to have a phone conversation.
